>>What democracy assassinates people who are suspects without trial?"

I agree that some of Israel's actions are wrong.

A democracy living next to a terrorist failed state. Let's remember the situation, shall we? If Israel occupied all the territories, if it was assassinating people in areas of Israeli jurisdiction, this criticism would be justifed.

The problem arises because Israel does not occupy all the teritories, in fact 95% of the Palestinians in the territories live under PA rule. Under Oslo, the PA was responsible for stopping terrorists. It was only after the PA's long and conspicuous failure (during 18 months of intifada) to stop the terrorists, arrest them (even when given explicit names by both the US and Israel), shut down their factories, etc., etc, that Israel began its policy of "targeting killings".

The IDF says that its policy is not to kill in revenge, but to prevent "ticking bombs" from crossing into Israel. It's certainly true that once they make it into Israeli territory they are almost impossible to stop, unless you get lucky.

I think Israel's real mistake was not to declare war outright and stop this stupid talk. The same people who denounce Israel's policy of assassination seem to think brainswashing young men to blow themselves up in pizzarias is just fine, since the Palestinians have an unlimited right to "resistance".
