If it were dismissive, I would agree.

Should Italian- Americans give up all show of ethnic pride? Should American Jews? African- Americans? Those around them cannot join. If Christians imply you cannot be a good citizen without being Christian, there is something to object to. If they are just going about their business, there is not.

I disagree that it is bound to alienate, and you do not manufacture cultural authority on the spot, you use what is there, like the Bible, or the Bhagavad- Gita, or the Analects.
