Thanks for that. But as I've already said the causes of terrorism we have most proximate influence over are military and financial support of those who directly or indirectly perform terrorism. We can't and shouldn't be Global Social Workers.
We have the generousity and wealth to supply business credits and Peace Corps volunteers, and support UN famine relief. Beyond that is viciously counter-productive war-creation by training and funding warlords. Which our side is happy, but wrong, to do. Our counter-Soviet efforts in the 80's built the wonderful high-tech caves and trained and brainwashed cadres of Afghanis in the arts of battle.
The unbelievable arrogance of DOD and foreign aid fans is that we are justified through all kinds of sophistry, including that in your Horowitz essay, to put blood and money on the line, under threat of .... well, terrible things.
The list of terrible things that will happen if we don't intervene militarily in god-forsaken places is, basically, whatever gets a rise out of the taxpayers, or more accurately, whatever can create enough cover to allow Congress and the administration to authorize the actions. In return these worthies get a flow of contributions to their campaigns and personal pockets from a long line of beneficiaries, which don't happen to include the US taxpayer.
Yes, we got hit and had to hit back, and did a fine and honorable job of it. I don't believe the intel excuse-mongers, and believe they should be fired months ago. Whether these failures occured by incompetence or design, their failures are incredible and their arrogance insulting. I don't believe the excuses coming at us for war-powers and war mongering. In fact, the more I hear the more suspicious I get. |
