I didn't say depressed, I said desperate. It's a desperate tactic, borne of a conviction that they cannot win any other way. Consider this:

"Pretty tempting for the poor pious boys of Gaza, who have no other chance of marrying, making a living, or otherwise bringing honor to their families."

A good description of desperation, I'd say.

The cruel joke is, they cannot win through suicide tactics either. All they accomplish is to enrage their enemies, filling them with the desire to help them to their martyrs' deaths.
