Overlay TDMA?....GSM and TDMA both use MAP41 core, so the overlay should work for both with some tweaks. TDMA does not use SIM cards, so that would be a change.

GSM1x is simply that you use CDMA (IS-95 or 1x) as the actual transmission tecnology over the air. but the phone and the network think they are running GSM. Kinda like your PC running TCP/IP protocol, but not knowing if it is coming in over a dialup line, a DSL line or a cable modem.

What is takes in terms of hardware is an interface unit at teh Basestation processor which takes teh CDMA packet data and translates it into a GSM MAP41 format to go to the old GSM base station processor and switches. In the handset, rahter than using the built in ROM to define a USER, they would use teh SIM card to define a user. Also the handset has to figure out the GSM handshaking protocol, rather than the CDMA protocol. That is pretty much the changes summed up. (It really is alot of work, however...)
