SAN JOSE -- The automatic test equipment (ATE) business fell a staggering 64.2% in 2001 over 2000, but new and complex chip-testing requirements will help boost this market in 2002 and beyond, according to executives from Schlumberger Semiconductor Solutions here today.

The ATE market suffered its worst downturn in history last year. In total, the ATE business fell from $6.7 billion in terms of sales in 2000, to $2.4 billion in 2001, according to VLSI Research Inc. of San Jose.

"2001 was a tough year," said Jean-Luc Pelissier, vice president and general manager of Schlumberger Semiconductor Solutions, based in San Jose. "It was a tough year for everyone," Pelissier said in an interview with SBN at the company's headquarters on Thursday.
