SAN MATEO, Calif. — Synopsys Inc. reported revenue growth of 12 percent for the first quarter of fiscal 2002 compared with the year-ago quarter, but gave shaky guidance for the second quarter and the rest of the year.

On a conference call with analysts Wednesday (Feb. 20), Synopsys officials said the company garnered revenues of $175.5 million and net income of $17.3 million in the first quarter, on an earnings before goodwill (EBG) basis, or $0.27 per share.

The company's net income increased 37 percent on an EBG basis compared to the first quarter of fiscal 2001.

"Orders as a whole were soft in the quarter as many customers tightened expenses in January after failing to see their business return in Q4," said Brad Henske, chief financial officer of Synopsys. Synopsys' bookings were down in the quarter on a year over year basis, mainly because the company saw increased bookings in the year-ago first quarter when it switched many of its users from time-based licenses to subscription licenses, Henske said.

Software revenues grew 19 percent over the same quarter last year, but the consulting and training businesses continued to lag, he said. Service revenue for the quarter totaled $69 million, down $12.9 million sequentially and $17.9 million year over year.
