Sharon remark called odious

Friday, February 22, 2002

The French government on Thursday denounced as "odious" complaints by Prime Minister Ariel Sharon of Israel about a growth in anti-Semitism in France.

In an address Wednesday to American Jewish leaders in Jerusalem, Sharon said that Israel was "looking with great worry at the situation in France, where there are 700,000 Jews who are facing a very dangerous wave of anti-Semitism." He added: "There are close to 6 million Arabs there and they might be in great danger, so we're making all the preparations to receive them here." "To condemn France as an anti-Semitic country is odious," said a Foreign Ministry spokesman, Bernard Valero.

French Jewish leaders also distanced themselves from Sharon's comments and said there was no evidence of any increase in French emigration to Israel.
