Good post. If I could add some marketing perspective:

Intel continues to adapt to their marketplace and customer demand. It's crazy to have a price increase in the middle of your best selling season, it just makes you a difficult company to deal with. A firm price, that delivers the same g.m. over the period, will give more confidence to your manufacturer customers, and make their decisions easier. It demonstrates a "partnership" relationship with their OEM's (and, if I had to guess, was instigated at the request of Intel's customers).

One other point, I really don't think Intel has any significant competition for PC CPU's at this point. They would probobly like to keep the other guys around just to keep the D.O.J. off their backs. Once you've won the war, it's time to cement relationships with your allies.
