8:20am 02/22/02 Elan halts testing on vaccine: Wash Post By Julie Rannazzisi Elan Corp. (ELN) will be in the limelight Friday following a Washington Post article indicating that testing on a vaccine made by the Irish specialty pharmaceutical company to treat Alzheimer's disease was halted as twelve volunteers became ill with brain inflammation. The Post cited sources familiar with the study. Elan is developing the vaccine with Wyeth, the pharmaceutical division of American Home Products (AHP) . The newspaper quoted an Elan spokesman as saying that the company "follows all appropriate clinical standards to ensure the well-being of all patients in studies" and added that those who experienced negative effects "have been treated and are responding appropriately." Elan's stock has been under the gun this month after disclosing that the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission has launched an investigation into the company. Elan faced questions in the media over the way it accounted for partnerships with other companies. Shares climbed 3.2 percent to $13.75 on Thursday.
