For a comprehensive overview of the science see:

The major established company that is making a similar product is Medi-ject, linked in the above. Medi-ject was incubated by, and is still significantly owned by Becton Dickinson(BDX), a major insulin producer. Target market and customer base were clearly defined at inception. The company completed all development and regulatory approvals before going public.

The Medi-ject device is mechanical and is designed to deliver drugs trans-dermally. To acheive an intermuscular injection a greater force is needed that can be acheived with a mechanical device. All vaccines are intermuscular. That's why the nurse will ask patients to stay for a few minutes after an injection, to note any adverse reactions.

From the Medi-ject prospectus, page 31 is the following: " Another company, Bioject Inc, has sold a CO2 powered injector since 1993. The injector is designed for and used almost exclusively for vaccinations in doctors' offices or public clinics."

Medi-ject is not serious competition to Bioject. The company makes a fine product but for a different market.

Many other delivery vectors are in development:

ELAN - time release capsules, skin patches
March 25,97 news release on FDA approval for Carbatrol
(tried a link but it gives expired error)

DURA - breath activated inhaler for asthmatics

ALKERMES - polymers injected under the skin for slow release

THERATECH - skin and gum patches

FUISZ - oral drug delivery
June 6,97 newsrelease on US patent for Soft-Chew
(another expired link)

Despite the comfort factor of these oral and transdermal vectors, the vaccine retains its' status as the application of preference for many drugs, see the recent news on polio:

More exciting is the new field of DNA vaccines. There is an excellent overview of this science in October/96 Scientific America article:
