Paul- Xylinx released earnings and a dim (poor visability)
forecast.
My understanding is that Altera recognizes sales when chips are
released into the channel and Xylinx recognizes sales at later
point when they are actually purchased by the end customer.
As the PLD inventory built up with the customers, Xylinx was the
first to feel the pain and Altera was later due to the difference
in accounting method. If the current problems are truely only
an inventory correction issue, then relief should be seen first
with Xylinx.
Xylinx offered little hope, stating "several customers have
worked through their inventory."
My question is, what is your outlook for Altera' qtr now that
you have seen Xylinx's numbers?
Further, do you believe the PLD industry is really only going
through an inventory correction or are we faced with a bigger
problem of industry-wide oversupply of PLD?

Another question. As PLD densities increase does this mean
significantly less chips are needed for the same design and
therefore reducing demand for total number of chips?
Comments are appreciated.
