Here is a repeat post from a similar thread of interest:

"I think maybe the opposite is happening: MSFT may be at its peak of influence, much like IBM was prior to the 80's.

From my simple perspective, the compnay that can flourish in an "open architecture" environment will blow away the closed competition. If you doubt this, ask yourself what happened to Wang Labs, Unisys, and other proprietary system manufacturers.

I came to this thread because I was looking for evidence of Sun having market leader potential, and possibly dethroning Microsoft.

If I am wrong please enlighten me, because I really don't know everything there is to know about the two companies, and would like a discussion of this possibility.
