Unfortunately - as the O'Neill comments from the article point out - they are not planning on any comprehensive tax code reform... just a little (if I may paraphrase) 'fiddling around the edges'.

I hate to be cynical, but American taxpayers have heard this kind of call for reform many times before... and usually been grossly disappointed as more and more preferences were placed in the code, instead of removing them. "Simplification" has usually resulted in greater, not lesser, complications... and ever more special preferences and paybacks to favored groups.

So, although I'm all for the 'simplification' that O'Neill called for... and I hope some good can come from the Treasury Department publicizing the outrageous costs of compliance under our present loophole-ridden tax code... mark me down as skeptical until the final gavel bangs and we can see a positive result.

As Mark Twain once pointed out: "No man's wallet is safe when Congress is in session."
