Deep cyclicals are performing well but why are the utilities behaving so badly - especially those paying good dividends. Indeed if there is underlying optimism of a recovery wouldn't the utilities be confirming the trend or has Enron tainted that bad? This from the Bond Talk site.

"Continued strength in cyclical stocks reflects investor optimism on the economic outlook. Deep cyclicals such as basic materials stocks, for example, are at their high for the year, led by strength in shares of Dow Chemical, International Paper, and Alcoa. The strength underscores the notion that investors have retained their optimism on the economy despite widespread concerns over issues related to corporate governance. Investors clearly do not believe that so-called Enronitis poses systemic risks."
