Fixed assets; tangible, long lived assets held for use within the firm to support revenue making activities for several years beyond the balance sheet date. They are not normally converted into cash. Instead, they are kept in the business to assist in revenue making activities for several years beyond the balance sheet date.

Disposal value estimated value of the fixed asset when it is sold or scrapped.

Techniclly you are correct. But as an investor you need to look at current disposal value. The BV may say that a co has x billion in tangible assets but if their disposal value is half, someone is out a bunch of money. That part relates to us, the investor the guy at the bottom of the food chain. I am not saying this is the case with Mirant, as hopefully they will not need to sell any more of their tangible assets.
