No "ggg's" here, Karen -- Is this meant seriously?
Serious? No. Mostly wistful. Touch of sarcasm. I'm in a reflective mood this morning. Just came off a couple of days of discussion with Neo on schools and values. That was still in the back of my mind this morning when I read a Post article on alpha, beta, and gamma girls in the schoolyard.
washingtonpost.com
The collision of those two plus your initial comment--
<<I believe many factors contribute to this scandal, beginning with the general decay in moral values in our society, which itself largely reflects a general undermining of our traditional standards of morality such as Christian ethics.>>
--somehow spawned my remark.
In your post, you started with parents who bully schools into ignoring ethics and attribute that to the decline of Christian morality. I couldn't help but think about how schools came to be at the point where parents can bully them. They sure couldn't when I was in school. Schools had authority then, moral and otherwise. Now they have threats of lawsuits or parents "choosing" another school if they discipline a kid. How did that happen? What undercut their authority?
Well, of course, it's a complicated issue, but the leading force in denigrating the teaching establishment (which at one time did not tolerate plagiarism and probably still doesn't but is cowed by the politics) and pushing for parents' rights has been the family values crowd. You reap what you sow. How ironic!
So that's how my wry comment came about.
Now, THAT is what I call being a responsible parent of the highest morality.
I agree.
As part of my morning's pondering, I came to the conclusion that I just don't much like social conservatives as a group At best, they're boring. At worst, they sanctimoniously skate near the edges of fascism. It is only because of my innate tendency to avoid making negative judgments about people that I've managed to get this far in life without acknowledging that I prefer the company of others.
I should probably be recording these thoughts in my ledger, if I kept one, rather than posting them but, what the hell.
