In this environment, any explanation damns them. It's highly doubtful that they purposefully neglected to report them because that would be fraud... and just as it is stupid to screw the pooch for pennies, it is more stupid to risk penalties/prison for fraud. More likely is that they got their wires crossed and failed to report it because of pure negligence on their part or that of the accountants, or both. But again, in this age of witch hunts, the latter reason would give them little peace, as people would then begin to wonder what else they have forgotten to report.

Obviously, they have chosen to sweep this embarrassment under the carpet in hopes that it will fade with time. That's a bit risky in my judgement... better to lay the cards on the table than to allow their share price to suffer death by a thousand rumors, and to risk a government investigation that might not end until they know how many times a week John Chambers has a bowel movement. And the media... well...
