Thank you for the link! I finally got part one of the dilemma resolved after many, many frustratingly unsuccessful attempts.

What it boiled down to was three steps: 1). I had to find and copy onto disk the file: Inbox.dbx on the old Win95 machine. 2). I then had to copy this file to where Outlook Express files it on the new machine(saying "yes" to "do I want to overwrite the existing file of same name"). But new 98 machine still did not see the files until I then 3). opened Outlook and then imported the files.

I just did the process for the inbox, don't think I'm too much concerned with the rest, but I'll think it over later and maybe copy the "sent" stuff.
