Myanmar, with a total land area of 676,577 square kilometres (261,228 square miles), is the largest country on the mainland of Southeast Asia. The population of Myanmar, spread over seven states and seven divisions, was estimated at 42.33 million in 1992/1993. The exploration, development, production and transportation of crude oil and natural gas in Myanmar are the responsibility of Myanma Oil and Gas Enterprise (MOGE). MOGE operates 14 oil and gas fields in onshore areas for the production of oil and gas. To promote development in the oil and gas sector, MOGE has signed 20 production sharing contracts with 14 multinational oil companies to explore and produce petroleum in several onshore and offshore areas of Myanmar since 1989. Currently offshore in Myanmar, Total/Unocal and Texaco/Premier/Nippon Oil are developing new hydrocarbon opportunities under production sharing contracts with MOGE.
