A couple of thoughts on the new FOMA handset....

- It's a good sign that they finally managed to get a new model out. I was beginning to worry that only Panasonic and NEC were willing to invest the resources for the first generation FOMA handsets. This phone is manufacturered by Mitsubishi (I dont know why, but the D stands for Mitsubishi).

- The talk and standby times still suck. This handset must have the same integration issues as the first models. Another FPGA instead of an ASIC?

- It is nice to see a firm date for the dual-mode PDC models. Docomo is going to need those to really push FOMA into the mainstream. Also, as more models come out the prices on the first generation handsets are likely to drop.

•64 Kbps digital videophone.

Anyone have an idea how HDR is going to handle a videophone? It seems to me that the important numbers for a videophone are a guaranteed level on the bitrate and a low level of latency. I know that HDR trades latency for better throughput but dont have a good idea on how noticable the latency would be on a videophone.
