Slacker,

<< Qualcomm seems to have made a real commitment to W-CDMA >>

I agree. It is a necessary commitment. IMO, and it comes in the nick of time despite the fact that the market initially is small. Best to be a tad behind the curve, than way behind it.

<< while there are still only two announced customers for their W-CDMA ASIC's, I think that will change over the next six to twelve months. >>

Samsung & Sanyo the two?

How it changes over the next six to twelve months will be interesting.

<< The trials with Vodafone are an especially good sign ... >>

On the Euro scene Vodafone is a must for Qualcomm.

Most certainly Vodafone has the need for a multi-mode (including 1x-RTT) chip, which gets them in the door, and makes them a candidate for multi-mode (not including 1x-RTT).

Qualcomm will have a solution for this need before anyone else has a solution.

Just how big a need Vodafone has for a multi-mode (including 1x-RTT) chip (for worldwide travellers as opposed to the general subscriber base) remains to be seen.

With some 28 networks, most of which are upgrading to GPRS, and many to WCDMA it provides a great opportunity for IOT.

In the process it allows them to potentially demonstrate chipset superiority if indeed that superiority exists.

None of this mitigates Hoffman's statement, IMO.

It will be interesting to see who integrates a PDC solution into J-Phones WCDMA phones.
