Arrests made in 1998 homicide

(Waterbury-WTNH, Feb. 24, 2002 6:15 PM) _ A four year old murder mystery in Waterbury has been solved.

Police have made two arrests in the death of 20-year-old Scott Mascia.

Police say he was shot while driving his car just blocks away from his home.

Rich Mascia, Scott's brother says,"I always had hope. I knew eventually somebody would slip up. I never lost hope."

Rich Mascia says he just couldn't stop believing his brother's killer would one day be caught.

It's been more than four years since 20-year-old Scott Mascia was shot in the head while driving home from the gym.

He was just blocks from his house when he was killed and his grandparents say he had so much to live for.

Scott's Grandmother Gwynne Alderson,"He had such big dreams and high hopes of what he was gonna do."

Harry Alderson, Scott's Grandfather says,"You couldn't find a nicer kid.. you really couldn't."

The murder devastated Scott's family and baffled Waterbury police.

Captain Neil O'Leary says,"The frustration from the members of the detective bureau was phenomenal."

Captain Neil O'Leary says investigators followed lead after lead, but nothing panned out until a few weeks ago when someone called in a tip after seeing a story about the unsolved case.

O'Leary says,"The caller seemed so sincere that the investigator who took the call came in and said, you know, we may have something here."

The tip led police to this man, 27-year-old Anthony Azukas of East Hartford.

Police say Azukas fired the shot which killed Scott Mascia in what they're calling nothing more than a random act of violence.

Scott's family hopes the arrest will lead to the justice they've been seeking.

"Four years -- too long -- but at least now something's moving.. and we're just looking forward to seeing him pay the price."

Rich Mascia says,"I'd like to see them suffer the rest of their life behind bars. Rest of their life in jail. The death penalty's too good for them. They need to suffer."

Twenty-six-year-old Christopher Foody of Waterbury is charged with hindering the prosecution.
