Don: I had to laugh out loud when I read your last post to me. Give me a major break <g>. BB working the weekends for meal money <g>? What a hoot! Why stop there? Absurdity has no limits. How about BB on a street corner selling loaded funds for meal money while wearing a shark suit?
You know, I have often thought that a license be required before one is allowed to use the form of argument known as reductio de absurdum. In this type of argument, one seeks to disprove a propsoition by taking it to a convenient conclusion which just happens to be an absurdity.
Let's see here. We skipped over the newsletter issue ... and some other previous questions I asked... now where are we... oh, yes...now I remember. Instead of simply asking what I meant by "working stiff", you have attempted to take a simple statement of mine regarding BB and use it as a springboard for you to conclude that I must think BB will never see critical mass, much less pay for his children's college education, because he is such an idiot that he has to earn meal money by working on the weekends. Gee, did I say all that? I must have gotten carried away <g>.
Now as I recall, Don, when Dan made a comment about BB, Jr. living off Dad, you gathered all your resources and enlisted others to shame Dan into an apology. I think what Dan said was off base; I think what you said to me was also off base. Should I call, Don, for you to apologize to me for attributing things to me that I never said? Sure, why not... but I won't wait on the edge of my seat for a response.
Do you remember post 663, Don, directed towards Dan where you said:
"Your vicious attack on his son is unprecedented on this thread and provides you with the obligation to apologize to all thread readers. If Junior fails to post here ever again I for one do not blame him! This is what is wrong with the internet. It attracts all types that attack innocent individuals unjustly and unfairly. I hope everyone on this thread repudiates this absurd attack on Brinker's son so he will be able to see one bad apple does not rotten the barrel." As you should know, Don, my statement that Bob is a working stiff that punches a clock on a holiday weekend was meant as a compliment. Loeber has it right. I never said that BB was "nothing but a working stiff." (Read my post... "anything other than a working stiff" were my words). Those were your words, not mine; likewise, the absurd conclusions you draw flowing from your interpretation of my statement were those you made yourself.
If you were to go back and read my posts on this thread, you will see that I have attempted to dispell the notion that BB does not work on holidays. I admire the work ethic in anyone and especially BB who obviously does not need to work, especially on the weekends, but chooses to do so for his own personal reasons.
BB has chosen to be a working stiff along with most of his listeners who probably have no choice but to be working stiffs. I admire him for his decision and respect him immensely. I don't think there is anything wrong with being a working stiff. I consider myself a working stiff. Many people I know and respect are working stiffs. Do you think there is something wrong with being a working stiff? The implications flowing from your post suggest you do.
Note that I just asked you what you believed and did not run off and conclude that you must think the average working Joe is wasting his time or some other equally absurd conclusion. The fact that you failed to ask for clarification before your attack suggests your intentions are least questionable. Check the apple in your pocket to see if it is rotten and let everyone on this thread know if it is or not.
Let me show by illustration in order to make my point clear on this form of argument can be abused. You ask in your post how will BB ever afford to send his children to college. Well, how do you know if BB ever paid totally for his children to go through college. (There is the springboard). What make you think that BB Jr. did not work at a job, at least through the summer, to pay for his college? (Here I go to the land of absurd). Or was BB Jr. merely carrying his Dad's credit card throughout campus while sucking on a beer keg in tow? (I am now firmly in the land of the absurd sitting right next to you... hello). I for one hope he does not read this thread, because if he does and sees your comment he may just decide he is wasting his time completely doing a radio show to an audience that thinks like that. (Note that I am now trying to shame you into silence). I think that you owe an apology to BB Jr. for such a outright character attack. (Well, at least you did not demand that I apologize to BB for something I never said).
The notion that a statement which I never made will be a factor for BB to consider in deciding whether to continue his radio program is plain silly. Who am I, an average Joe, to be having an influence on BB's life. Besides, Bob is his own man and he will do what is best for Bob. Loeber is right. I have great respect for BB. But even if I got down on my hands and knees and thanked him over and over agian for all his help and all his wonderful service and begged him to carry on and I told him how I always listen to his show, Bob will do what Bob will do. You, of all people, should know that by now.
Good luck. |
