Re: Windows Stability

It's not the OS, it's the platform and the applications. Wintel has been patiently addressing the platform issue for the past several years with a succession of standards like the upcoming PC98 (see www8.zdnet.com for details) and has slowly been weaning applications away from the "I'll drive the hardware" attitude that is the root cause for so many DOS-based horror stories. My Win95 system has run for weeks and weeks without a glitch only to fail because some older 16-bit program has a memory leak or some other program I install decides to tinker with some system file. What folks fail to understand is that when you run 85% of the install base you get at least 85% of the headaches which come with that honor. Frankly, I find it amazing that Win95 does as good a job as it does on some of the creakier PCs it "supports" or that it holds up as well as it does running some of the more unruly "legacy" applications still around. MSFT could have slammed the door on the sins of the past, but being customer driven they have chosen a more evolutionary path which gives both users and the development industry time to adjust. From the article referenced above it looks like 1999 is the year we finally bid adieu to the venerable ISA bus. That move alone will probably at least double reliability as the last vestiges of the DOS era are put behind us.
