Thoughts that occur to me:

--the principal base of US ethnicity then was German. Was there something in the cultural nature of Germans that leans fascist?

--The Communist revolution and the labor movement & anarchists all were a threat to the capitalistic power bases of the robber barons and elites of that era. Could they have had undue influence over the media and the status quo bodies (prosecutors, courts, etc) that helped foster the anti-'Other' sentiments?
