I am not arguing that elites were less racist, only that they were less violent because they were not at the bottom of the ladder struggling for their livelihood against recent immigrants and people of color.

I am arguing that this is one reason for the elite to not practice overt racism against the recent immigrants and people of color in the lower classes. They were secure against immigrants and people of color coming into their own enclaves. They did not mingle with upper class immigrants, people of color or Jews, either.
