Anybody read Alex Balkanski's 6/17/96 "DVD: The Coming Revolution in Consumer Electronics" ?

Its interesting. For example, a SCSI controller is shown in a flow chart of a PC DVD-ROM player. Also, he discusses aspect ratios and mentions 16:9 enhanced definition television (EDT) and of course 4:3. However, he indicates that unless you have a 16:9 TV the DVD player will "either crop the wide-screen video to fit a 4:3 screen or put it in letterbox format."

Now my personal reaction is that I'd rather see the DVD in full screen 16:9 than a crop version which I'd find distracting and would make me wonder why I spent $$$ for it.

Soooooo, where can I get a EDTV ? Can it just be a 16:9 PC-monitor ? Or do I have to get the 16:9 TV version ? Does the TV 16:9 version use the same scan scheme as the 16:9 PC-monitor version ? Or are they different ? I'll look but doesn't SONY make a EDTV ? If they do is that just for Japan and Europe scan rates ?

Will the new DVD software (the thing you stick in the DVD drive) have both the PC monitor 16:9 scan scheme as well as the 16:9 TV scan scheme ?

Near the end of the article he suggest that the PC isn't likely to be used as a DVD viewing system. For me, I'd like the PC DVD so I could watch the titles on a higher resoluton PC-monitor with no interlace scan scheme. Also, I could play with my mouse adjusting left/right channels and all the other Dolby Surround stuff. Plus, if a scene bores me I could mouse Netscape for a minute or two.
