Intel CEO predicts 30-GHz processors on 450-mm wafers in 2017

SAN FRANCISCO -- What will the semiconductor industry look like in the year 2017 or so?

Semiconductor technology will remain alive and well for at least the next 15 years, enabling the eventual development of 30-GHz microprocessors on 450-mm wafer substrates, said Craig Barrett, chief executive of Intel Corp. of Santa Clara, Calif.

At that time, processors and other chips will be processed at the 10-nm (0.010-micron) node, Barrett said during the opening keynote at the Intel Developer Forum (IDF) here today.

At present, Intel is producing chips, based on 0.13-micron technology. It is also ramping up its products in its 300-mm fabs in a move to reduce overall chip costs.

"I am looking forward to the next-generation [of wafer sizes]," he said, referring to 18-inch or 450-mm products.
