Author: (JIANG CHEN) China's information industry leaders and telecommunications authorities and companies will attend the fourth China CDMA International Summit at the China World Hotel in Beijing next month to discuss the latest CDMA (code division multiple access) technology. The summit, endorsed by the Ministry of Information Industry (MII), is co-organized by the China Institute of Communications (CIC) and the Hong Kong-based Institute for International Research (IIR).
China Unicom has recently launched a nationwide CDMA operation. The summit is expected to paint a "clearer" picture of CDMA as well as discuss relevant technical issues of CDMA 1X technology, CDMA 1X radio network deployment, deployment strategies for CDMA mobile operators and opportunities for CDMA handsets. Live demonstrations will also be conducted on-site by leading CDMA manufacturers.
Global telecommunication giants including Ericsson, Motorola, Nortel and Qualcomm, domestic telecommunications manufacturers ZTE and the CDMA Development Group will join other delegates from world-renowned telecommunications operators including LG Telecom, KDDI, KT Freetel, SK Telecom and Telstra during the summit. Attendants will participate in discussions, and share valuable experience in international telecommunications operation through case analysis.
Liu Cai, vice-chairman & secretary-general of CIC and Wang Jianzhou, president of China Unicom, will speak at the summit on government policies for China's mobile communications industry, government support for CDMA development in China and the prospects of CDMA in China.
CDMA is the second mobile digital standard compared with the global system of mobile communication (GSM).
China will quickly surpass the United States to be the largest CDMA market in the world.
With support from the government and domestic manufacturers, CDMA technology and its network will bring tremendous opportunities to domestic handset manufacturers, and will boost the mobile communications industry in China. Moreover, China Unicom's potential listing in China's A-share stock market and the upcoming launch of GSM-CDMA two-mode handsets will further promote CDMA development in China.
According to China Unicom, its second phase of CDMA 1X, capable of delivering 3G compliant data speeds, is under way. Bidding for the project will take place in March, formal construction will begin in June, and it will be completed by the end of the year, officials said. By then, the coverage of CDMA 1X network will be greatly expanded, and CDMA technology will be upgraded to the next generation, enabling delivery of graphics, video and multi-media services. |
