GSM1x is a 1x overlay on top of GSM. It is the same thing that Q did a demo system on for VOD in 1995-1996. It is not new and the concpet is not that hard to understand. It is however more than "just a few lines of code" as we used to tease teh software engineers with all the time.

The basic concept is that the packet data stream between the cell basestation and the switching system is just a stream of data bits and you could put anything as the air interface out there as long as it was made to fake it like it was a GSM basestation. So Qualcomm wrote some translation software which takes teh backhaul data stream from CDMA1x and translates it to the backhaul data stream for GSM. Very simple in concept.

The other item which needs to be added to the system would be the SIM card capability for the handset to comply with GSM system requirements. but since the Chinese phones already hve a RUIM card, then these type of handsets will be around anyway in hardware form. From there adding software modifications to make it use and store the data like a GSM phone is all that is needed.

With these modificaitons, you get GSM1x using the 1X waveform over the air. Simple concpet, alot of hard work by dedicated engineers (but not impossible!).

The implications for this is that in countries which do not have more bandwidth to go buy or auction off and they already have GSM, they can add GSM1x over the top to increase teh cpacity of their systems while still allowing part of the spectrum to still be GSM phones. they can then operate the two system in parallel using both phone types (GSM and GSM1x) on the very same system. In fact they can have pure 1x, pure GSM, and an overlay all running in the same system. That would be big for a country like China which already has quite a large GSM population now, but is in need of alot more capacity in the system.

the cost of a CDMA1x phone will fast approach the cost of a GSM phone worldwide now that the ZIF technology is taking hold. Once this happens, then the small upgrade cost to a carrier would be of little importance compared to the $B's that they might have to pay for new spectrum.

Hope that helps.
