4-Day Exhibition Gives Visitors Glimpse of Future Mobile Phone Service

A four-day international trade show, dubbed the EXPO COMM Korea 2002, gives visitors a glimpse of future mobile phone services.
Domestic mobile phone vendors and network service operators showcased their state-of-the-art products and technologies at the exhibition, now under way at the Convention and Exhibition Center (COEX).
More than 130 information and telecommunications companies from both Korea and abroad will showcase their technologies and products at an international telecom trade show, the organizer said.
The Ministry of Information and Communication and the Korea Association of Information and Telecommunication are sponsoring the event.
Samsung Electronics unveiled a new mobile handset named SCH-E120, which is equipped with a 40-polyphony ringing sound and a 260,000-color thin flat transistor-liquefied crystal display (TFT-LCD) screen.
The new phone embedded with a wide camera for face-to-face videoconferencing among users, will be commercially available in the first half of this year.
Alongside, Samsung debuted the world's first color-screen phone based on the European-backed general packet radio system (GPRS) technology. The GPRS is an interim step towards full-fledged 3G mobile service.
Seeking to combine cellular communications with technology, the world's third-largest mobile phone vendor also unveiled a GPS-enabled phone that informs users of their location and destination time.

The GPS-enabled wireless phone is designed to support future location- based and emergency services as they become available.
Its rival LG Electronics introduced a series of its latest products for CDMA2000 1X EV-DO (evolution-data optimized) and wideband-CDMA network.
In particular, its VOD-enabled phone, which enables customers to download and watch movies through a wireless Web connection, drew much attention from visitors.
Despite the recent foray of world leader Nokia and the long-term presence of Motorola, Samsung and LG have continued to dominate the local mobile phone market, with a combined market share of more than 75 percent at the end of last year.
During the 7th trade show, domestic mobile carriers _ SK Telecom, KTF and LG Telecom _ also showed off their next-generation telephony service, widely known as IMT-2000 here.
With the trial operation of third-generation (3G) mobile telephony service, which delivers data at 40 times the speed of current mobile data transmission speed. Those companies will exhibit Internet telephony, wireless Web solutions and Bluetooth technology.
``The annual trade show will focus on the global wireless telecommunication sector and will examine the larger global economic and business trends,'' the organizer said.
