4-Day Exhibition Gives Visitors Glimpse of Future Mobile Phone Service

A four-day international trade show, dubbed the EXPO COMM Korea 2002, gives
visitors a glimpse of future mobile phone services.

Domestic mobile phone vendors and network service operators showcased their
state-of-the-art products and technologies at the exhibition, now under way at the
Convention and Exhibition Center (COEX).

More than 130 information and telecommunications companies from both Korea and
abroad will showcase their technologies and products at an international telecom trade
show, the organizer said.

The Ministry of Information and Communication and the Korea Association of
Information and Telecommunication are sponsoring the event.

Samsung Electronics unveiled a new mobile handset named SCH-E120, which is
equipped with a 40-polyphony ringing sound and a 260,000-color thin flat
transistor-liquefied crystal display (TFT-LCD) screen.

The new phone embedded with a wide camera for face-to-face videoconferencing
among users, will be commercially available in the first half of this year.

Alongside, Samsung debuted the world's first color-screen phone based on the
European-backed general packet radio system (GPRS) technology. The GPRS is an
interim step towards full-fledged 3G mobile service.

Seeking to combine cellular communications with technology, the world's third-largest
mobile phone vendor also unveiled a GPS-enabled phone that informs users of their
location and destination time.

Named SPH-1300, the phone blends a 256-color touch screen with the Palm operating
system and a cellular phone

The GPS-enabled wireless phone is designed to support future location- based and
emergency services as they become available.

Its rival LG Electronics introduced a series of its latest products for CDMA2000 1X
EV-DO (evolution-data optimized) and wideband-CDMA network.

In particular, its VOD-enabled phone, which enables customers to download and watch
movies through a wireless Web connection, drew much attention from visitors.

Despite the recent foray of world leader Nokia and the long-term presence of
Motorola, Samsung and LG have continued to dominate the local mobile phone market,
with a combined market share of more than 75 percent at the end of last year.

During the 7th trade show, domestic mobile carriers _ SK Telecom, KTF and LG
Telecom _ also showed off their next-generation telephony service, widely known as
IMT-2000 here.

With the trial operation of third-generation (3G) mobile telephony service, which
delivers data at 40 times the speed of current mobile data transmission speed. Those
companies will exhibit Internet telephony, wireless Web solutions and Bluetooth
technology.

``The annual trade show will focus on the global wireless telecommunication sector and
will examine the larger global economic and business trends,'' the organizer said.
