mm02 brings 3G investment to a halt

By Nick Farrell [26-02-2002]

BT Mobile spin-off puts expenditure on hold

BT Mobile spin-off mm02 has slammed the brakes on the development of third-generation (3G) services.
The company is refusing to spend more than £700m from its original network upgrade fund of £3.3bn which was earmarked for the project, until it becomes clear when 3G will be commercially sustainable.

A company source said that mm02 was likely to hold off 3G investment until March 2003 when it will review its expenditure.

The financial press has given the thumbs up to the plan maintaining that it is wiser to delay 3G investment until the technology becomes widely available.

Analyst firm Giga has already identified 2004 as the target date when this is most likely to happen.

3G spending, widely seen by investors as a bottomless pit, has only long-term results and mm02 may want to spend its money elsewhere. The company's demerger from BT required a huge amount of capital expenditure.
