I read the report referenced upstream in #5089 several times and replied to the original poster on the GLW board with the following:

----

"While I always find it encouraging (if even only marginally inspiring) to read such reports, I'd like to point out that this one points to all of the old technology except for PONs. And even when PONs are indicated, the inference is that they will be using ATM PON (as evidenced by the SONET rates of 622 Mb/s and 155 Mb/s). Nowhere in the report is either Ethernet or Ethernet PONs mentioned, much less Ethernet in the First Mile (EFM).

"The problem with this, and I think that this is consistent with Verizon's backing of the report (and the author's own prior history as an economist at an incumbent) is that SONET and ATM are far more expensive to deploy than Ethernet and other so-called next gen architectures.

"So, while the blueprint that has been laid out appears aggressive, and to some degree, progressive, it simultaneously carries all of the heavy baggage that is causing the present carriers' architectures to be doomed, in many ways. If I had more time I'd go into some other precepts espoused by the author, but I'm running late."
