Well, in response to Jonathan Edwards tongue lashing I would point to Christ in the Scriptures. The times He pointed His finger and called down condemnation on others was against the Saduccees and Pharisees of His time. The leaders of the synagogues who had no love within their hearts and yet claimed to speak in the Name of the Lord. Their evil ways were viewed as Christ to be the most devious of crimes. He called them children of the devil. Pretty harsh words. I would have to say that this is still a very big problem within the church. Men who set themselves up to be righteous and yet have little of the truth of Christ within. Christ's love was felt by every sinner whom He came in contact with. For Christ said that He came not to condemn but to save. In light of this I would have to question first and foremost who Edward's audience is. Who is he addressing? If he is addressing those who do not know Christ, then I would say his approach is flawed because as a child of God we are to put on the breastplate of love and righteousness, not condemnation and justice. However, I cannot go against the Word of God when it does speak on Hell awaiting all who do not except Christ as their Lord and Savior and expiation for sins. Why Edwards chose to focus on this part of the gospel is beyond me. As for me, I chose to focus on Christ and His love flowing through me into the lives of others to somehow emulate Christ and His character so that through me, men and women may see who He truly is and desire to come to Him and have a relationship with Him.
