In this case, validating the process. Who would they have sampled SRAMs and misc. logic circuits to? Now the term "engineering samples" are often used to mean those samples of pre-release chips for initial evaluation. But they often have "unusual" characteristics, like the Cotulla chips that only lasted a few hours before they fried, but since AMD doesn't have any customers for SRAMs I doubt if they left AMD.

So the current chips would be "engineering samples", but, as I stated, I doubt if anyone outside of the company will be able to actually do anything other than watch some canned demos.
