Keith: Clearly WCDMA (UMTS) will provide a market for Qualcomm chips in the EU, and Qualcomm will earn royalties from the use of WCDMA (UMTS) in Western Europe as elsewhere.

And yes the combination chips and especially the ZIF chips have competitive advantages and a clear timetable.

But, having observed EU behavior for a long long time, I am not sanguine about rational decision based on the best interests of the European people. Perhaps that will happen, but there is a long history of finding ways to support European companies against foreign - and especially US companies. (Note the new EU patent proposals which are designed to limit what a company can protect).

Again, I hope you are right.
