"Glenn, what about platinum? I read an article recently that said all the platinum ever mined couldn't fill a room."

James,

Platinum makes great jewelry. Your article about platinum is totally accurate. My wife's rings have platinum heads. Most people love the look of platinum when they see it but the cost keeps the majority from buying platinum. The cost is a lot higher for two reason. The metal itself costs more and due to its hardness, the labor to create a finished piece is far higher. Also, gold is 79 on the periodic table with an atomic weight of 196.96654. The density is g/mL 19.3 Platinum is 78 with an atomic weight of 195.08. The density is g/mL 21.4. We are talking a 10% greater density. The the same appearance of a jewelry piece made from platinum is going to use 10% more metal.

The bottom line is most people after pricing the item in platinum ask how much in white gold and typically go with the white gold. We inventory both but sell gold over platinunm at least 10:1. Keep in mind there are people that will not buy anything but platinum.
