With all that "noise" in the last few weeks, it sure took a lot of effort to digest what really happened in the wireless world.

Bottom line, I only saw ONE significant news: KOREAN IS MAKING MONEY WITH NON VOICE WIRELESS SERVICE.

I did not say 3G, 1X, GSM, CDMA, GRPS ......

To me, none is as important as showing the world that indeed money can be made with data. A 9% increase in ARPU is nothing to sneeze at.

After Germany and UK completed their 3G auctions, I opined that the price was prohibitively expensive. Nothing has changed that opinion. Forget WCDMA as it is planned today. I just don't see how it is going to happen.

Europe's success with GSM was well described in this paper published a couple of years ago.

How the hell are all these countries, the carriers, the vendors going to duplicate the circumstances that created one GSM network for Europe? I think there is a false impression that WCDMA is a migration path for this GSM network when in fact, it will be a bunch of islands for years before they can link them together to resemble network.

This could be more complicated than the formation of the EC and the Euro.

Forget GSM1X for Europe. No one is going to make such a bold move without a group decision. If these CEOs have brains a fraction the size of their egos, they would see the disastrous path they had led their respective companies down to. Forget Europe. Chances are, India will have nationwide 3G before Europe.

So, who is going to lead the way going forward? Korea, no doubt. KDDI is next. China has always used Korea as a model and they will certainly follow Korea if the current trend continues.

Enough rant for now?
