There are two significant dates in this argument:

(1) 1854, when Commodore Perry and seven ships of the U.S. Navy sailed into Shimoda Harbor and established trade relations with Japan.

(2) 1945, when Japan surrendered and Gen. MacArthur became, in essence, a foreign dictator.

One occurred roughly 150 years ago, the other roughly 50 years ago.

Can we be so sure GWB meant a half century and not a century and a half? The answer is no.

Tiger Paw has a valid point, so it doesn't serve your purpose to be so defensive about this latest GWB gaffe.
