Two potential witnesses in the Enron scandal -- David Duncan, fired by Andersen over his role as chief auditor for the Enron account, and Ben Glisan, Enron's former treasurer -- may be offered immunity by federal prosecutors, the Wall Street Journal reported. No deals have been struck and offers may be made to other figures in exchange for their cooperation, according to the Journal. It's believed the testimony of insiders is needed to further any criminal prosecutions in the Enron case. Glisan's testimony may be problematic, since the Journal reported that he personally profited from some of the questionable transactions involving Enron and special-purpose entities it set up. In addition, the SEC is reported to be building a civil case aimed at compelling former Enron executives to give up trading profits they made before the company's collapse. Separately, the Journal reported that the federally backed Pension Benefit Guaranty Corp. may be called on to pay out benefits in light of serious underfunding in Enron's pension plan.
