SINGAPORE (Reuters) - Debate over the strength of Singapore's recovery from recession is not over and assumptions of a rebound in the second half of this year will be examined again after 2001 gross domestic product (GDP) data on Thursday.

The export-driven city state, reeling from its worst downturn since 1964, is bracing for worsening unemployment this year but most analysts expect growth to return sometime in the last six months of 2002, in line with a pick-up in the United States.

Manufacturing data for January, which on Tuesday showed a surprise 4.7 percent rise from a year earlier after eight months of decline, added ballast to recovery hopes.

The Ministry of Trade and Industry is due to publish its final 2001 GDP numbers in its economic survey on Thursday at 8:00 a.m. (0000 GMT), along with data on sectoral performances, inflation and employment.

"The market has priced in a mid-year warming up taking place. The warming up will gather more steam," said Kaan Quan Hon, an economist with DBS Bank.
