The production value of Taiwan's system-on-a-chip (SOC) before the end of 2005 is expected to be the No. 1 in the world, according to forecasts in the 3C Industry White Paper released by the National Science Council yesterday.

The white paper disclosed that the government would set up a national-level SOC design center, initiate a training program in order to train 3C educators, and promote international exchange for achieving the leadership status in the world 3C industry.

The National Information Infrastructure (NII) released the white paper as its research results.

NII chairman Hsia Han-min indicated that information appliances (IA) will play a key role on the market of computer and communications products and a strong IA industry depend on a competitive SOC industry.

Annual sales of integrated circuits (IC) packing and testing declined 20 to 30 percent over the past two years, while sales of SOC products grew by 30 percent last year, the NII chairman said.
