Wireless telecom worsening: analyst

"Wireless is getting worse, not better," Marianne Wolk, telecom software analyst for Robertson Stephens, said at the Robertson Stephens Technology Conference in San Francisco on Tuesday.
She said that telecom budgets will be moving targets in the second half of the year as companies such as Cox (COX: news, chart, profile) and Comcast (CMCSK: news, chart, profile) cut their outlays. Some areas of spending, however, include customer relationship management, voice and data convergence as well as wireless Internet technology.
Beyond the short term, she expects to see consolidation in the sector.
She pointed to Amdocs (DOX: news, chart, profile) as a company that could offer billing services across various platforms. For instance, Amdocs doesn't currently offer billing through cable. And they could possibly buy their way into that market, she noted.
As well, Comverse Technology (CMVT: news, chart, profile) will likely buy its way into e-mail functionality, she said. And other companies such as OpenWave, Acer and RIM will be buyers or sellers, she said.
