If it were up to me, calling a private residence on the phone or ringing the doorbell uninvited would be against the law except in cases of emergency.

Well, I suppose we could think of a lot of circumstances where this might be Draconian, as in needing to borrow a cup of a sugar. But I am with you in spirit. Whatever happened to our laws against trespassing on private property? And I agree that unsolicited phone calls are nothing less than a technological form of trespass and home invasion.
