not a history major but I see parallels. Their gold and silver colelcting is equal in essence to what the US has been doing, the gold and silver from that time equates to foreign invesmtent, foreign credit given us, etc now(money now is not what it was then, we collect money as they did)
so the US is accumulating wealth from all over and in my mind doing it so far beyond that justified by the industries you mentiont that they may as not be there and we are as much a paper tiger as they were, aside from a stronger military imo.
