Just checked out the local VZ outlet. Still a line of customers waiting, 3 people working the counters, one more with a clipboard greeting customers and handling the waiting list. Can not check cingular store anymore since they closed it a few months ago. One customer per week, as far I could tell by checking it regularly, was not enough to keep it open.
Told the VZ person with the clipboard that I was interested in 1X phones, but she had only been there two days and did not know. I checked the phones on display, two Nokia phones, the old 5000 series and a 3000 series that seemed to have more features. No free phones, prices are up. For instance, the Nokia 5000 is $160 without contract, $99 with one year, and about $70 with a two-year contract. The two-year contract is new to me, and all of the phones seem to cost more than in the past. Guess that carrier subsidies are going down.
Also, they offer a free trial period of two weeks. |
