U.S. Offers $5 Million for Information on Pearl Case

Feb 27 1:29pm ET

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The United States on Wednesday offered rewards of up to
$5 million for information about the killers of Wall Street Journal reporter Daniel Pearl,
who was abducted in Pakistan in January.

The State Department has posted the offer on its Rewards for Justice Web site
(www.rewardsforjustice.net) and will advertise it in Pakistan, said spokesman Richard
Boucher.

"We are announcing a $5 million reward for information leading to the arrest or
conviction in any country of those responsible for the kidnapping and murder of Daniel
Pearl," he told a daily briefing.

The United States has asked Pakistan to hand over radical Islamist Ahmed Omar
Saeed Sheikh, the man suspected of organizing the kidnapping and murder.

A group calling itself the National Movement for the Restoration of Pakistani
Sovereignty claimed responsibility for kidnapping Pearl and demanded that the United
States release the detainees it is holding at Guantanamo Bay in Cuba.

The authorities have not found Pearl's body but they have seen what they say is a
convincing videotape of his execution.

The United States on Tuesday sent a formal request that Pakistan hand over Sheikh
Omar and The New York Times reported on Wednesday that Pakistani President
Pervez Musharraf had agreed in principle after certain conditions are met.

"This will be a topic that will now be discussed with the Pakistani government over
time. There are a number of issues that need to be dealt with," Boucher said.

"They said they would examine our request and we will keep in contact with them as
they formulate a response."
