Doctor Dr. Doktor: The only way to defend against terrorists is with offensive action The other "only way" is to promote democracy. To paraphrase Christopher Hitchens, what kind of alliance would you rather have-one with a nation with whom we disagree often but with whom we share rock solid basic values(like France), or with a nation who trumpets support for America but with whom we share almost nothing in common(like Saudi Arabia)? The world of the future could be full of disagreement, but it is shared values in the end that will root out terror, not smart bombs.
