RITE AID TO ACCEPT PFIZER, NOVARTIS PRESCRIPTION BENEFIT CARDS THAT HELP LOW INCOME SENIORS SAVE MONEY ON PRESCRIPTION DRUGS

Company Continues to Accept GlaxoSmithKline Orange Card

CAMP HILL, PA-February 27, 2002--Rite Aid Corporation (NYSE, PCX: RAD) announced today that beginning March 1 it will accept the Pfizer Share Card and the Novartis CareCard at its more than 3,500 pharmacies nationwide. The company has accepted the GlaxoSmithKline Orange Card since January 1, 2002.

“We are pleased to accept these cards because they not only assist low-income seniors with their drug costs, but also allow them to use the pharmacist they trust. In addition, the reimbursements that we receive under these programs make it possible for us to continue to provide the valuable pharmacy services that are so important to our customers,” said Mary Sammons, Rite Aid president and chief operating officer.

With the Pfizer Share Card seniors pay $15 for a 30-day supply of Pfizer medicines including drugs for conditions that are often left untreated by the elderly like diabetes, high blood pressure, Alzheimer’s, high cholesterol and depression.

The Novartis CareCard provides a 25% discount off the wholesale list price of drugs that Novartis manufactures, including those that treat high blood pressure, Alzheimer’s, high cholesterol and osteoporosis.

The GlaxoSmithKline program offers a 25% discount off the wholesale list price of drugs manufactured by Glaxo including those used to treat congestive heart failure, diabetes, Parkinson’s Disease and depression.

To qualify for the programs, patients must be 65 years of age or older with no other prescription coverage and meet certain income guidelines.
